What a missed call actually costs a home-service business

Most contractors know they miss calls. Few have done the math. Here's the simple formula — and why the fix is usually the highest-return thing you can install.

Ask a tree service owner how many calls they miss in a week and you'll get a shrug and a number like 'a few.' Ask what those calls were worth and the shrug gets bigger. That's not carelessness — it's that nobody has ever put the math in front of them.

So here it is. It takes thirty seconds and it usually changes how an owner thinks about their phone.

The formula

Missed calls per week × your average job value × the share of answered calls you normally close × 4.33 weeks. That's your monthly leak — the revenue that walked in the door and left because nobody picked up.

Take a real example. A landscaper misses five calls a week. Their average job is $450. When they do answer, they close about three in ten. That's 5 × $450 × 0.30 × 4.33 — roughly $2,900 a month, or about $35,000 a year. From voicemail.

Most owners push back on one number: 'not every missed call is a real lead.' Fair. Cut it in half. It's still $17,000 a year, and it's still the cheapest problem in the business to fix.

Why callers don't leave voicemails

Homeowners searching for a contractor are usually working down a list — the map pack, a neighbor's recommendation, three tabs open. They call the first one. If it rings out, they don't leave a message; they call the second one. Whoever answers first, or replies first, gets the walkthrough.

That's the whole game in local services. Not the best website, not the most trucks — the fastest credible response.

What 'answering' can look like when you're on a job

You can't take a call at 60 feet. But your business can respond. Missed-call text-back sends a text from your business number the moment a call rings out: a real message in your voice, asking how you can help. The homeowner reads it in the time it would take to dial the next company, and most of them text back.

From there the conversation is yours to pick up between jobs — or the booking system can put the estimate on your calendar before you've climbed down.

  • It uses your existing number — no new phone system.
  • It only fires when a call isn't answered, so it never gets in the way of a human.
  • It's usually live within a week.
