How to get more Google reviews without begging
Review count and recency decide who gets hired in local services. Here's a system that asks every customer at the right moment — and keeps the bad ones off your profile honestly.
Two contractors do equally good work. One has 14 reviews from three years ago. The other has 80, with four from last month. The homeowner picks the second one without reading a single review. That's how the map pack works — and it's why asking for reviews is not vanity, it's lead generation.
Why owners don't ask
It feels awkward. You just finished the job and asking for a favor seems pushy. So you plan to text them later, and later never comes. The fix isn't more willpower. It's removing yourself from the loop.
The system
A good review funnel does four things, every time, without you thinking about it:
- Timing: the ask goes out when the job is marked done or the invoice is paid — when the customer is happiest and the result is right in front of them.
- One tap: the text contains a link that opens your Google review box directly. Every extra step cuts the response rate roughly in half.
- A private door for problems: before the review link, the message asks how the job went. An unhappy answer routes to you, not to Google. You fix it; the one-star never gets written. This is honest — everyone gets asked; nobody is filtered out of leaving a review.
- Reply to everything: responding to reviews, good and bad, is a ranking signal. The system drops each new review in your inbox with a draft reply so it's a two-tap habit.
What not to do
Don't buy reviews, don't ask only the customers you know loved it (Google calls this gating and penalizes it), and don't set up a kiosk that leaves reviews from your own IP address. Consistent, honest asking beats every shortcut — and it compounds.
Clean up the profile while you're at it
Reviews matter most when the rest of your Google Business Profile is right: correct categories, every service listed, real photos, accurate hours, and a website link that actually books jobs. We tune all of it as part of the review-funnel install.
